January 27, 2006; 11:30 a.m.Breaking NewsLeelanau deputies search for armed teen in alleged abduction attemptTRAVERSE CITY - Police are searching for an armed teenager who allegedly attempted to abduct a Leelanau County resident at gunpoint.Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf said Dean Michael Kinske, 18, allegedly forced his way into a Cleveland Township house late Thursday. Kinske allegedly held at gunpoint a fellow Leland High School student and her mother. Oltersdorf would not release the names of the victims. Kinske, masked and dressed in full camouflage, allegedly handcuffed and bound one of the residents and prepared to abduct the other. Police said the bound resident broke free and confronted Kinske, who fled. Police arrived at the house on Lime Lake Road in Cleveland Township where the attempted abduction allegedly occurred at about 11 p.m. Oltersdorf said it's believed Kinske could have at least one handgun as well as an assault rifle. Oltersdorf said Kinske had "no relationship prior to the incident" with the female student. He said Kinske's motive appears to be robbery. Kinske attended Leland High School and Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, Oltersdorf said. Leland High School was not in session Friday because of a teacher in-service day. Secretary of State records show a Lake Leelanau address for Kinske. "According to those who know him, he is just a normal teenager, nothing identifiable prior to this incident...," Oltersdorf said. The sheriff said he has "no idea" where Kinske might be. "Everybody is working on this at this moment, following up on some leads," Oltersdorf said. The sheriff's department issued a national and state-wide alert. Police said Kinske is driving a red 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport with U.S. Marine stickers in the rear window and on the rear bumper. Its Michigan license plate is ADW2026. Anyone with information on the suspect or who has seen the vehicle should contact the sheriff's office at (231) 256-8800.
