Comets win at Glen Lake Volleyball Invitational

      MAPLE CITY - Leland improved to 32-4 Saturday by beating Suttons Bay 25-13, 25-15 in the finals of the Glen Lake Volleyball Invitational.
      The Comets beat Glen Lake (21-10, 21-5), Brethren (21-3, 21-11) and Cardinal Mooney (21-9, 21-17) in pool play. Leland then upended Kalkaska (25-12, 25-16) in the semifinals.
      Pacing the Comets: Alisha Glass (50 kills, 16 assists, 23 digs, 8 blocks, 11 aces), Jennifer Hecht (18 kills, 22 digs, 15 aces), Daina Parent (4 kills, 19 digs, 12 aces), Whitney Grant (63 assists, 7 digs, 2 aces), McKenna Haverberg (7 aces, 10 digs) and Erin Sneed (10 assists, 16 digs, 11 aces).
      Suttons Bay advanced through pool play by beating St. Francis (21-12, 21-12), Northport (21-5, 21-6), Kalkaska (21-19, 18-21, 15-12) and Benzie (19-21, 21-13, 15-12). The Norse then topped Glen Lake in the semifinals (25-12, 23-25, 15-9).
      Holly Orban (40 of 45 serving, 49 kills, 4 blocks, 50 digs), Kelsey Wick (60 of 63 serving, 33 kills, 5 blocks, 46 digs), Christa Neskey (40 of 42 serving, 41 assists, 16 digs), Anna Prior (47 of 50 serving, 38 assists, 17 digs), Fran Belanger (36 of 37 serving, 4 kills, 17 digs), Charlotte Stowe (43 of 46 serving, 7 kills, 2 blocks, 36 digs) and Maggie Walters (17 kills, 15 blocks) led the Norse.
      Glen Lake reached the semifinals before falling to Suttons Bay. Earlier, the Lakers lost to Leland, beat Cardinal Mooney (21-15, 21-13) and Brethren (21-19, 21-17).
      Topping the Lakers: Jessica Odziana (10 kills, 37 digs), Sabrina Galla (20 assists, 7 kills, 25 digs), Calli Hurlin (25 of 26 serving, 6 kills, 13 digs), Sarah Zywicki (9 aces, 8 kills, 30 digs) and Tara Novak (15 kills, 22 digs).
      Kalkaska also reached the semifinals before losing to Leland. The Blazers beat Northport (21-8, 16-21, 15-7), Benzie (21-12, 21-17) and St. Francis (21-15, 18-21, 15-8) and lost to Suttons Bay in pool play.
      Pacing the Blazers: Shantelle Deater (25 kills, 31 digs 8 aces, 6 blocks), Megan Dunn (16 assists, 6 aces), Kaley Babcock (20 kills, 4 aces, 41 digs), Danielle Luca (39 assists, 24 digs), Katie Jones (7 kills, 6 aces, 25 of 29 serving) and Sam Graham (13 kills, 15 digs, 3 blocks).
      St.Francis finished 2-2. The Gladiators lost to Suttons Bay, beat Benzie (14-21, 21-13, 15-13) and Northport (21-18, 21-5) and lost to Kalkaska.
      Kelley Gavigan (4 assists, 12 kills, 1 ace, 29 digs), Jill Kuhlman (16 kills, 6 aces, 39 digs, 1 block), Mariel Dryden (25 assists, 1 kill, 2 aces, 15 digs) and Kristina Droste (11 kills, 6 aces, 45 digs) paced St. Francis.

MORE VOLLEYBALL
Forest Area third at Johannesburg
      Forest Area finished third in the Johannesburg-Lewiston Invitational.
      The Warriors beat Mio (25-21, 25-23), split ith Bellaire (23-25, 25-24), then beat Fairview (25-19, 25-14) and Onaway (25-15, 25-24).
      In the semifinals, Forest Area lost to Hillman (25-27, 17-25). The Warriors beat Mancelona for third (25-14, 23-25, 25-22).
      Leading the Warriors: Lizzy Shy (18 kills, 51 of 53 serving, 25 digs), Maria Babrick (24 digs, 64 assists), Carri Ingersoll (35 kills, 46 of 47 serving, 17 digs) and Juliana Barbieri (19 kills, 38 of 39 serving, 41 digs). Ingersoll was picked to the all-tournament team.
     
Central JV places third at Gaylord
      Traverse City Central finished third in a JV tournament at Gaylord.
      The Trojans beat Inland Lakes and split with Alpena and Pellston to reach the quarterfinals where they edged Charlevoix (25-17, 18-25, 15-6).
      Central lost to Pellston in the semifinals (18-25, 21-25) before downing Roscommon for third (25-11, 28-26).
      The Trojans were led by Janna Tucker (11 digs, 7 aces, 9 kills), Erin Chadwell (10 aces, 11 kills, 3 blocks) and Katie Holden (18 assists, 8 aces). Tucker was on the all-tournament team.
     
Traverse City East wins Gaylord tournament
      It took a second crack at it, but the Traverse City East freshman team got past Pellston to win the Gaylord Invitational.
      The Trojans split with the Hornets in pool play (19-25, 25-13), but topped Pellston 25-14, 25-14 in the tournament finals to take home the hardware.
      TC East (6-2) downed Charlevoix 25-6, 25-9 and split with Cheboygan and Pellston to get out of pool play. The Trojans then defeated Roscommon I the quarterfinals 25-10, 25-17 and got past Alpena 23-25, 25-23, 15-12 to earn a spot in the title game.
      Standouts for East were Dori Lansbach, Emma Berger, Lyndsay Luzac, Kara VanHorn, Whitney Strait and Haley Engle.

WRESTLING
West's Gillison earns MVP honors
      Traverse City West's Trevor Gillison was named MVP in a tournament in Bay City.
      Gillison went 5-0 at 125 pounds for the Titans.
      West finished 1-4. The Titans lost to Gaylord (59-24), Bay City Central (48-27), Roscommon (54-21) and Caro (59-19). They beat Alpena (48-24).
      Dustin Drake won four matches at 112 for West. Josh Elmer and Seth Chargo won three matches at 119 and 135, respectively.
     
Manton's Skiver is MVP at Charlevoix tourney
      Manton'sTom Skiver won all three of his matches by 15-0 scores to claim MVP honors in a tournament at Charlevoix.
      Charlevoix won the tournament. Manton was fourth.
      Corey Webb at 112 and Brandon Norman at 215 also went 3-0 for the Rangers. David Jackson was second at 152 as was John O'Connor at 160. Jake Cuthbert took third at 135.
     
Glads place third in Onaway Invitational
      Traverse City St. Francis took third place in the Onaway Invitational, one spot behind the host Cardinals.
      Houghton Lake won the six-team event.
      The Glads had three individual champions, as Andrew Anderson cleaned up at 145 pounds, going 4-0 with four pins. Heavyweight Paul Taylor and 140-pounder Dana Larsen were each 2-0 with a pair of pins to win their weight classes.
      Taking runner-up spots for TCSF were Jerrett Martin (103), Paul Elliott (125) and Brad Martin (135), while Garret Zamaron (112), Joe Beckwith (152) and Brendan Bradfield (171) placed third in their classes.
      St. Francis is back on the mat next Saturday in a tournament in Montague.
     
Central B team second at Northview
      The Traverse City Central B team placed second in a tournament at Northview.
      The Trojans beat Northview, Allegan and Muskegon Mona Shores and lost to Greenville.
      Ryan Harp went undefeated at 215 for the Trojans.

SWIMMING
TC swimmers second at Falcon Invite
      Traverse City earned four first-place finishes en route to taking second in the seven-team Falcon Invitational at Ogemaw Heights.
      Bay City Central won the meet with 403.5 points. Traverse City had 323. Gaylord was sixth with 83.
      For Traverse City, Tyler Sylvester won the 100 butterfly (58.80) and 200 IM (2:14.50) while Andrew Brunner captured the 50 freestyle (23.10). Brunner and Sylvester joined Darryl Hallman and Dylan Humitz to take the 200 medley relay (1:51.07).
      Brunner also took second in the 100 freestyle (50.52). Other seconds: Wes Jones in the 500 freestyle (5:19.67); Sam Kittendorf in the 100 backstroke (1:04.43); Brunner, Humitz, Jones and Kittendorf in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.72); and Jones, Kittendorf, Hallman and Sylvester in the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.06).
      Jones added a third in the 200 freetsyle (1:56.65) and Humitz a fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.76).
