Deputy fired for violating policies

SUTTONS BAY — Leelanau County sheriff's deputy Bruce Beeker was fired because he allegedly violated "several department policies and procedures" but Sheriff Michael Oltersdorf refused to specify what led to his termination.

Beeker, 37, was dismissed Wednesday after nearly 11 years as a patrol deputy after an internal investigation found he allegedly violated his "oath of office" and employee conduct policies. He was suspended with pay April 6.

Attempts to reach Beeker for comment were unsuccessful.

"He was terminated," Oltersdorf said. "He is entitled to due process and upon advice of the county's attorney no additional information will be released at this time."

Oltersdorf declined comment on Beeker's alleged violations pending an appeal of his dismissal. It followed a two-week internal investigation by Undersheriff Scott Wooters.
