November 24, 2005Frankfort, Leland winAfter back-to-back losses in the regional finals in 2003 and 2004, Frankfort coach Tim Reznich can finally take a sigh of relief. The Panthers advanced to their first-ever Class D girls basketball quarterfinal with a 49-25 romp over Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in Wednesday night's regional title game at Manistee. "It's good to finally get over the hump," Reznich said. "My family can enjoy Thanksgiving for a change." The Panthers (23-2) will face Leland (18-6) on Tuesday at TC Central. The Comets won their third straight regional title with a 37-32 victory over Gaylord St. Mary at Boyne Falls. Frankfort jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead and increased the margin to 34-14 by halftime. Leading the Panthers were Brenna Banktson (19 points, 12 rebounds), Jenny Loney (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Nicole Marshall (11 points). Sacred Heart (22-3) received eight points from Kelsey Denoyelles (8). Leland jumped out to a 12-5 lead after one quarter against St. Mary. The Snowbirds (21-2) rallied in the final period, cutting the lead to 34-31 with 1:49 remaining on a jumper by Jessi Palmer. But Alisha Glass and Erin Sneed hit free throws in the final minute to seal the win. It was the Comets' defense that coach Larry Glass was gushing about after the game. "Our defense was really special," Larry Glass said. "They didn't get too many good shots and they didn't get too many second shots. "When we can do that against anybody, we'll be in the ball game with everybody." Alisha Glass had 16 points and Sneed 12 for Leland. Kate Spyhalski paced Gaylord St. Mary with nine points.
