Bus rolls off road, campers not hurt

Bus was traveling about 10 mph

WELLSTON - Campers and counselors from Lake Ann Baptist Camp escaped generally unscathed after the bus carrying them back from a rafting trip rolled off a dirt road in Manistee County.
Executive Director Ken Riley said about 46 campers and counselors were on the bus when it rolled off a road embankment just after 5 p.m. Tuesday in Manistee County.
Three people were taken to Cadillac's Mercy Hospital as a precaution before being released, including two campers and a 20-year-old counselor who received six stitches after her knees went through a bus window, Riley said.
"There were no injuries to the campers themselves, only the counselor who required stitches," he said.
Riley said the bus was traveling about 10 miles per hour on a U.S. Forest Service trail off M-55 when it lost control on the shoulder of the road.
"The shoulder was soft and the bus lost its footing," he said. "The front tire slid down, the side of the road gave way and bus slowly rolled onto its side."
Manistee County Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski said he doesn't expect a ticket to be issued against the bus driver.
The camp, which hosts over 3,500 campers a year, currently has 300 visiting the Lake Ann facility.
Riley said many of the campers involved in the accident cooked their meals along the road while waiting for another bus.
"The campers are doing fine and back today doing activities as if nothing happened," he said. "All the parents were called and the kids are out rafting again. It was traumatic at the time, but it's back to normal."
