January 7, 2005Bus slips into trees; students injuredThe one still hospitalized is in good conditionByRecord-Eagle staff writer KALKASKA - All but one of several students injured in a low-speed bus crash were released from the hospital. A school bus headed down a hill on an ice-covered dirt road slid into a snowbank and trees, injuring 13 students Thursday morning. Seven students were taken to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center by ambulance and others may have sought their own treatment, Forest Area Community Schools Superintendent Matthew Cairy said. As many as 13 students may have sought treatment after the accident, Kalkaska County Sheriff's deputies said. Cairy said all but one of the students had been released from the hospital by Thursday evening and the student who remained, a high-school-aged student, was listed in good condition. The bus was traveling at a very slow speed - around 5 mph down an ice-covered hill - and the driver could not avoid the accident, Cairy said. "There was a witness to this accident and he described it as happening in slow motion," Cairy said. He said the school bus driver has been with the district for four years and has an excellent safety record. The accident happened at around 7:30 a.m. on a hill on Inman Road west of Puffer Road in an area that straddles Springfield and Boardman townships. Rescue efforts were complicated by the road conditions - rescue vehicles had to park on top of a hill while injured students were shuttled to ambulances from the crash scene below, sheriff Bill Artress said in a press release. Around 45 students from kindergarten to 12th grade were on the bus at the time of the crash.
