'Kitchen' class teaches painting for life

TRAVERSE CITY - On Thursday afternoons, Just Imagine Creative Arts Healing Center's lower level is filled with talk of color, texture and brushes.
The "Kitchen Painting" class, actually held on the outer counter space of the kitchen, started meeting in mid-November.
Carrie Murphy teaches the informal group. She has been painting since 1985 and teaching painting for about five years. Murphy brings in a painting for students to make their own, and works with them, individually, on each technique. She also stresses the importance of painting as a regular part of, even a very busy, life.
"Since we have one painting to work from, you get to see everyone's interpretation of it, it's exciting to see the differences in people's work," said Betty Craig, who uses strong blues and greens in her paintings.
"It inspires me to paint. I've always wanted to and it makes me feel like 'I can do that," Kate Schichtel said.
Students begin with acrylic paint. "It's easy to clean up, gets you in the habit of taking care of brushes and is non-toxic," Murphy said.
