Interest grows in WiFi project

By

TRAVERSE CITY - Free wireless Internet access in downtown Traverse City is becoming a reality, project organizers said at a meeting Monday.
Traverse Community WiFi allows people with laptop computers and the right hardware to log on to the Internet for free via a nearby antenna.
A meeting Monday at the Downtown Development Authority office drew 17 people, including downtown business managers, owners and building owners. Several said they would be interested in participating.
Participants now include the Loading Dock bar at Cass and Lake streets and Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons. A third "host" will be turned on by the end of the month at the Traverse City Visitor's Center at Grandview Parkway and Union Street. A WiFi antenna there, with a range of about 900 feet, will cover the Open Space park.
DDA director Bryan Crough said his agency was looking into setting up WiFi "hot spots" to serve downtown.
A Web site about the WiFi project it is at http:/tcwf.taar.com.
Crough said he would like to see service at all of the parks and public areas, coffee shops, bookstores, city buildings and anywhere else the public congregates.
