The Civil War monument stands watch by the old Grand Traverse sheriff-s residence and jail. A gift from local citizens to Civil War veterans, the monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1890, before a crowd of 3,000 to 4,000 people, including 150 veterans and sons. It was moved to the new courthouse lawn about 1900 after the building was completed.
